What would it be like to have asthma but no access to effective medication?

Many people in the world know only too well. Asthma affects an estimated 262 million people and causes 455,000 deaths a year, or more than 1,000 per day. In low-income countries, asthma drugs are often either unaffordable or unavailable.

Our vision: Effective asthma medication for all

In the West we take effective asthma medication for granted. But in low-income countries asthma often goes uncontrolled.

At Asthma International we focus on children. According to the World Health Organization, asthma is the most common chronic disease in children and adolescents globally. In terms of numbers of sufferers, it ranks far ahead of diseases such as diabetes, cancer and HIV. Children with asthma may be unable to attend school. They may be unable to run and play. Their lung development may be curtailed so that they cannot lead healthy lives as adults or earn a living. Asthma has the power to blight lives – and to kill, at the rate of over 1,000 people per day.

The World Health Organization succinctly states that "in children with asthma, poverty aggravates asthma and asthma aggravates poverty.”

This is the situation that Asthma International seeks to redress. Asthma international supplies asthma medication and advice to existing non-profit clinics in low-income countries so that no child is robbed of their childhood by asthma.
